Works Well But a Bear to Start, April 27, 2010

I use this in my NH home on trees which I clear for expanding my daylily farm. I looked through the many options and bought this due to the reviews and the reputation of the company. But beware.

It took seven hours of trying and five days to get it started the first time. I even called the manufacturer's hot line which was helpful but they said to me that this was a common problem.

First a suggestion. Follow the directions but beware the flooding. Follow each step but you may have to do what I was told to do several times.

Remove the cowling and remove the spark plug and turn the engine over to expel the excess fuel. Then clean the plug and let it dry. It may take time since the fuel mix with oil does not evaporate quickly, the oil is a surfactant and stays on the plug. Let the engine cool down then replace the plug, and start all over again. It took three times to get it to finally turn over. It finally turned over.

It cuts well and seems to start well after the first almost impossible start up.

The manual is poorly written and unless you have used chain saws before you may have a difficult time. The manual can and is confusing and is poorly laid out. I have seen better but frankly the manuals for most machines are poorly written.

The 18" chain saw works well on most trees and the chain needs constant monitoring at the start to keep the tension at the required level. One should always watch for this problem. The tension adjust is easy to perform since it is external and on the side of the machine.

It is a relatively light machine for medium duty work. It is well balanced and easy to handle. Again safety is the key issue, gloves, glasses, and respect at all times for the chain and the environment is necessary.

After it started it has worked well thus far. The replacement chains are a bit difficult to buy, standard but they also require some on line searching. Amazon should bundle all of the additional parts in one place which they do not.

Starting second and ensuing times seems to work well.

Bought this at my local dealer last year and have used it quite a lot. Have had no trouble at all starting it, almost always on first pull after priming, not sure why the other reviewer had trouble. I put a 20 inch bar on it, and it goes through whatever I want. Much less vibration than other saws I've used. Easy to clean and maintain. Would buy it again.

Be sure to shop around town for the best price.

Powerful Beast, September 30, 2009

I am what I would consider a novice chainsaw user who has previously owned an entry model Homelite 33 cc chainsaw.
Having moved to a fully wooded acre property (3 years ago) I was beginning the search for a more powerful chainsaw-that is until a 30 to 40 foot oak tree fell on my house.
At that point I put any more internet research behind me and rushed down to my local power equipment shop (we still have those in Pa.) and was faced with a somewhat limited choice of Husky Chainsaws.
The 18 inch 450 anniversary model was in my price range (379 $ plus tax) as well as a modest trade in for my Homelite.
At 50.2 cc and 3.2 horses It seemed like it could help me clear the oak tree which was 34" at the trunk - not a tiny tree.

I brought the orange monster home and within a minute I was in my chainsaw garb and had the Husky up and running.
I had previously removed all the small branches with a pruner so now I was ready to rock.

All was going smoothly until (with my somewhat limited technique) I had the saw stuck in a log-more than once. When I finally managed to free the bar from the tree, I had mangled the chain enough to where even after 45 minutes I couldn`t fit it back on.
So back to the shop the next day where the mechanic managed to straighten the chain out.

Back home and sawing again I am noticing that the wood is getting a blackish color (burnt) and wood becoming harder to cut telling me that either the chain was dull already or lack of chain oil.

Back to the shop again where mechanic tells me the chain is dull - I get a new one, come back home and finally got to see what this machine can do !
With a sharp, well oiled chain, this Husky 450 cuts like a pro.
It is slightly temperamental and will refuse to spin if a wood burr gets lodged in the chain etc. I suspect my beginners technique at sawing could be to blame.

The bottom line is that it did the job and I didn`t have to hire a tree company to bail me out. I am looking forward to using the saw for fireplace wood as well as making my shaded property a bit sunnier.

So I could recommend this Husky 450 Anniversary model to other users. At approx 11 pounds it is fairly light, starts up reasonably fast and didn`t break the bank...

This saw cuts like a hot knife through butter. Best starting saw ever too. Was looking for a Stihl initially, but I don't have a dealer nearby. Why don't they sell on line? They're probably stuck back in the 50's. Their loss, my gain. Glad I got the Husky.
